WOMEN EMPOWERMENT PROGRAMME

JYOTI SELF HELP GROUP (SHG) INITIATIVE

Jyoti SHG initiative was conceived as a joint programme of Little Flower Charitable Society and NABARD implemented through Community Development Societies (CDSs) of poor women. The grassroots of Jyoti SHG initiative are Neighbourhood Groups (NHG) that sends representatives to the Area Development Societies (ADS). The ADS sends its representatives to the Community Development Society (CDS), which completes the unique three-tier structure of Jyoti SHG initiate. Today, there are 132 NHGs, over 30 ADSs and 15 CDSs in Jyoti SHG Initiative. In Association with Nabard, the Society has established 132 Self-help Groups in Canal colony (20), Jalalabad (22), Ferozepur city (27), Malout (12), Ferozepur Cantt (31), Abhoar (7), Guruharsahai (25), and Sikhwala (6).

The Mission of Jyoti SHG initiate

There are two distinguishing characteristics that are unique to Jyoti SHG Initiative.

  • The universality of outreach - from its very inception Jyoti SHG initiative has attempted to bring every poor woman in the state within its fold. The sheer spread is mind boggling, and it is only because the support of the local community of women that the system has managed to persevere.

  • The scope of community interface in local governance - The functioning ofJyoti SHG initiative is tied up to the development initiatives of the local government in terms of social infrastructure, welfare or right based interventions or for employment generation.

Mile Stones of Jyoti SHG Initiative

Fifteen Tailoring Training Centers were opened. Through these centers Jyoti trains unemployed women to sew shirts, Indian Kurtas, Salwars, etc. These centers would empower the poor village women as an income earning member of the society. Jyoti has structured a three months tailoring syllabus for these centers.
